Miami Art & Design Week 2023 Top 10 exhibitions

With Miami as the backdrop, over 1,200 global galleries exhibit works of modern and contemporary artists, designers, and architects annually at Miami Art & Design Week. This year is no exception with art fairs, pop-up events, and exhibitions spread across the city from Dec 5-10th, including the Design District and Miami Beach regions.

Major highlights include the US debut of Italian design platform Alcova, the 19th edition of Design Miami and, of course, the iconic Art Basel Miami Beach. Miami Art & Design Week not only showcases artistic brilliance but also infuses the city with a vibrant energy, making it a must-attend event for those seeking an immersive cultural experience.

Lexus

Lexus partners with renowned solar designer Marjan van Aubel for Miami Art & Design Week 2023. An innovative sun-powered installation titled “8 Minutes and 20 Seconds,” inspired by the Lexus LF-ZC electric concept car, showcases the potential of carbon-neutral energy. The collaboration underscores Lexus’ dedication to innovation and sustainability.

Alcova

Now in its sixth edition, Alcova has become one of the most visited design events in the world. Over the past five years it has presented carefully selected work of over 300 designers, companies, galleries and cultural institutions from six continents. After having activated a former bakery factory, a cashmere factory, the buildings of a military hospital and an ex abattoir in Milan, Alcova is presently launching a special Miami edition to be held in an iconic 1950s motel.

Journey Through The Algorithmic Self

Launching on December 5th, the focal point of this year’s Miami Art Week lineup is set to be an expansive maze installation created by the multi-talented artist, designer, and activist Sebastian Errazuriz. Situated at Faena Beach, this monumental sand-covered installation, titled “MAZE: Journey Through the Algorithmic Self,” is a newly commissioned piece designed with the assistance of popular artificial intelligence platforms Midjourney and DALLE2.

Utopia at Miami Design District

“Utopia” by Bohinc Studio is a friendly and dynamic sculptural installation of irregular organic life-like forms made of cork. Their kind, yet mysterious shapes also assume function; to sit, play, and gather. The 900 egg-shaped birdhouses will hang throughout the neighbourhood’s trees, providing shelter for local wildlife. The sculptures include outdoor seating, tables, and an oversized solar-powered light across the neighbourhood.

Superblue

Wind your way through a mirrored labyrinth by Es Devlin, discover a transcendent digital environment by teamLab, and enter an enveloping light-based Ganzfeld work by James Turrell. Superblue is hosting an art week party for JR’s The Chronicles of Miami. This will unveil new works by acclaimed artist JR, complementing experiences by Es Devlin, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, teamLab, and James Turrell also on view inside the experiential art centre.

House of Tilly 

AI can be alarming, but there’s something disarming about experiencing it at The Standard. HOUSE OF TILLY is a collaboration between designers and Tilly AI, the world’s first AI designer, that showcases five ideas for living all set within a house-like structure. Unlike ChatGPT which churns data and delivers what you need like a fast food order, Tilly was designed to understand and respond to emotional intelligence to support human creativity.

The Pollination Dance at Design Miami/ 

For Maison Perrier-Jouët, Fernando Laposse has created an immersive installation, ‘‘The Pollination Dance”, inspired by the flower and its key role in a series of remarkable relationships within the ecosystem to which all species belong. In particular, he focuses on the process of pollination, with its complex and harmonious interactions between plants and the insects and animals which pollinate them. Pollen is the essential connection between the protagonists in this precious, ephemeral event, which is a celebration of life.

No Vacancy

This juried art competition presented by the City of Miami Beach and the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority places local artists on a platform and invites the public to experience Miami Beach’s famed hotels as fleeting art destinations in their own right. Now in its fourth year, No Vacancy has tapped 12 artists to create site-specific works across 12 iconic Miami Beach hotels like The Betsy, Faena, Esmé and The Catalina. Installations will be on view from November 16 through December 14, when the winner will be announced.

Rubell Museum

The Rubell Museum Miami currently features the Collection Highlights, Artist-in-Residence presentations like “Basil Kincaid: Spirit in the Gift” and “Alejandro Piñeiro Bello,” and solo displays by contemporary artists like Sharif Farrag, Savannah Claudia Levin, and Patrick Martinez. Delve into the diverse world of contemporary art at the museum, where Kincaid’s interdisciplinary practice explores connections between ancestry, place, and self, utilising quilting, collaging, photography, installation, performance, and found materials.

ICA Miami: Sasha Gordon

Sasha Gordon’s upcoming solo museum presentation at ICAMiami, set to debut during Miami Art Week, showcases her awareness of art historical themes and representation politics. In her latest works, she transforms herself into animal, botanical, and geological forms, exploring the objectification of bodies and addressing personal experiences of alienation. The exhibition challenges societal norms and promises a thought-provoking exploration of unconventional human bodies through Gordon’s unique lens.
